The Ships Of The Star Wars Universe

A huge part of the Star Wars magic comes from the various ships that traverse the Star Wars universe. From the opening credits of Episode IV when you're introduced to the Corellian Corvette and Star Destroyer to the climactic battle over Endor where you were introduced to the A-wing and B-wing - the various ships of the Star Wars live in your memory for different reasons.

We all have our own personal favourites although sometimes these choices were conflicted. You all admired the X-wing for its grace, speed and power. The X-xwing symbolized everything that was good, honorable and just in the fight against the Imperial army. Its long, sleek lines and powerful weapons array made it a formidable opponent and it easily outclassed most of the Imperial fighters. The X-wing was the lone warrior which fought against impossible odds and we all admired that aspect.

That being said there was the conflict. The X-wing represented all that was good but
which of you would deny wanting to pilot a Tie Fighter? For all the appeal of fighting as one of the good guys the pull of the Tie Fighter is almost irresistible. The Tie Fighter class of star fighter represented all that was evil, corrupt and just downright bad in the universe but there was one undeniable fact..... it was really cool. The dark, angular lines and the high pitched screeching of the Twin Ion Engines appealed to the dark corner of each our souls.

Looking at the larger Imperial and Rebel Allieance capital warships from the movies the same principles applied. The Imperial Star and Super Star Destroyers had sleek, menacing designs whereas the Rebel capital warships tended to be either kinda lumpy such as the Mon Calamari class of capital warships or looking like they'd been assembled from spare parts - Nebulon B frigates being a perfect example. As children you all drew Star Wars ships and thinking back which ships did you draw most often? That's right the wedge shaped Imperial destroyers.

The moral of the story is that as much as each of us wants to be a good guy there will always be the conflict against (or even for!) the Dark Side within each of us.
