The Characters of The Star Wars Universe

The list of individual characters in the Star Wars universe is immense and constantly expanding with the release of each new movie. From the first introduction to Darth Vader, through our meetings with Luke, Leia, Han and Chewie to the prequel views of Anakin and Padmé you've grown used to learning about new characters on an almost daily basis.

Which of you will ever forget Darth Vader? He became the epitome of evil in your eyes and your childrens eyes from the moment he first crushed Captain Antilles throat aboard the Corellian blockade runner Tantive IV. It was at this moment we learned that not all the characters in the Star Wars movies were going to be sweetness and light. Childhood nightmares involving Darth Vader were common and his name became synonymous with evil.

Similarly Han Solo became familiar to us as the rogueish knight in shining armour and Luke Skywalker as the farmboy turned hero. We learned that there are heroes inside the most unlikely of people and this touched base with many people who wished that they were more than their current selves. These characters appealed to the noble part of us - the part that wants to stretch out and be more than we are right now. To be remembered for decades or centuries to come.

There was only one small hitch. The Star Wars movies never gave us a chance to learn more about the background of each character. Who they were, where they came from and how did they create their early allegiances? We were only offered brief glimpses of each characters life so as not to interfere with the flow of each movie.
